What are the best practices for optimizing content so AI answers include your brand?

Make your pages reachable by the AI search crawlers, answer one buyer question per page in the first two sentences, state facts about your business in plain text, and show who wrote the page and when it was updated. Then measure by asking the engines the same questions on a schedule, because nobody can promise a placement.

Which crawlers need to be allowed in first?

An answer engine cannot name a page it cannot read. OpenAI documents separate crawlers for separate jobs: OAI-SearchBot is for search, GPTBot is for training, and ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a person asks. OpenAI says to allow OAI-SearchBot if you want your site to appear in ChatGPT search results, and that each setting is independent of the others (OpenAI crawler documentation). Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot for the same reason (Perplexity crawler documentation), and Anthropic lists Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User as the bots that affect visibility in Claude search (Anthropic crawler documentation).

What should a page look like to be quoted?

Write each page to answer one question a buyer would type, and put the answer in the first two sentences. Then add detail. A reader, or a model, should be able to lift the opening and have a correct, complete answer.

Use headings phrased as the questions people ask. Keep paragraphs short. State facts about your business as plain text on the page: what you do, where, for whom, what it costs, and how to reach you. If a fact is only in an image or a PDF, treat it as missing.

Does Google ask for anything special?

No. For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says there are no additional requirements and no special optimizations, and that no special schema.org markup is needed. It does ask that important content is available in text and that structured data matches the visible text (Google: AI features and your website).

What makes a page trustworthy to a machine?

Show who wrote it and when it was last updated. Google strongly encourages accurate authorship information such as bylines where readers would expect them, and warns that changing dates to look fresh when the content has not substantially changed is a red flag (Google: creating helpful content). Cite outside sources for general claims, and link to them.

What is the short version?

  • Allow the search crawlers: OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot.
  • Lead every page with a direct answer to one question.
  • Put facts about your business in plain, visible text.
  • Show a real byline and an honest updated date.
  • Add structured data only where it matches what the page says.
  • Re-check what the engines say on a schedule, and fix what is wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one change that matters most?

Letting the search crawlers read your site. If OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Claude-SearchBot are blocked, other work cannot help in those engines, because the page never gets into their search index.

Do I need to add FAQ markup?

It is not required for Google's AI features. Mark up questions only if they appear on the page as visible text, because Google says structured data must be a true representation of the page.

Should I block GPTBot to stay safe?

Blocking GPTBot tells OpenAI your content should not be used for training. It does not decide whether you appear in ChatGPT search, which is OAI-SearchBot's job. Decide on each separately.

How do I know the practices are working?

Ask the engines your buyers' questions before and after, on a schedule, and compare. One answer proves nothing, because answers vary from run to run.
