How much does AI-driven brand visibility impact website traffic?
There is no reliable industry-wide percentage, and we do not quote one. The effect on your site depends on how often engines name you, whether they link to you, and whether people click. You can measure it directly by counting visits that arrive from AI engines in your own analytics.
Is there a standard figure?
No, and be wary of anyone who gives one. We have not found a figure in the documentation of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or Perplexity that says how much traffic AI mentions send to a typical site. Numbers in vendor reports usually come from a narrow sample of sites and are not comparable.
What the documentation does say is where to look. Google states that traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in the overall Search data, reported in Search Console's Performance report under the "Web" search type (Google). It is not broken out on its own.
What decides whether a mention becomes a visit?
Three things. First, whether you are named at all. Second, whether the answer links to you; some answers cite sources and some do not. Third, whether the reader needs to click. Someone who asks "what is a good local plumber?" and gets three names may call without visiting your site, so a mention can produce a phone call, a search for your name, or a visit that shows up as direct traffic.
That means referral visits undercount the effect. Treat them as a floor.
How do I measure it on my own site?
- In Google Search Console, watch clicks and impressions over time in the Performance report.
- In your analytics, look at referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai and similar domains.
- Ask new customers how they found you, and add AI tools as an answer.
- Track branded search volume, which often rises when people hear your name from an AI.
Compare these against how often you are named, using the same time periods. If your mentions rise and your referrals stay flat, the engines may be naming you without linking.
What would a fair comparison look like?
Pick two periods of equal length, for example the four weeks before and after you fixed your pages. Record how often you were named in each, using the same questions, and set that beside visits from AI engines, branded searches and enquiries that mention an AI tool. If mentions rose and the other numbers rose too, the link is plausible. If mentions rose and nothing else moved, the engines may be naming you without sending readers to your site, or the questions you track may not be the ones your customers ask. Either way, you learn something specific to your business that no industry average would tell you.
Frequently asked questions
Will AI mentions replace my search traffic?
We cannot say, and no engine publishes data that would settle it. Measure both for your own business.
Why do I see few visits from AI engines?
Many answers do not link, and many readers act without clicking. Referrals are a floor.
Does Google separate AI Overview clicks?
Google says they are included in the Performance report under the Web search type, not shown separately.
Should I wait for traffic data before acting?
No. Fix wrong or missing answers now, because they cost you customers whether or not they show up as clicks.
