ChatGPT keeps giving wrong information about my company. How do I fix it?
You cannot edit ChatGPT directly, so you fix what it reads. Find which sources carry the wrong fact, correct them, and publish the right fact in plain text on your own site and the pages engines trust. Then ask the same questions again to confirm the answer changed.
Why does ChatGPT get facts about a company wrong?
Usually one of three reasons. The correct fact is not stated clearly anywhere the engine can read. An outdated or wrong version exists on a page the engine trusts, such as an old directory listing. Or the engine is confusing you with another business or person with a similar name.
Answer engines that search the web build their answers from pages they can fetch. OpenAI separates the crawler that feeds ChatGPT search results (OAI-SearchBot) from the one used for training (GPTBot) (OpenAI crawler documentation). Fixing the pages fixes the live answers. Wrong facts from a model's training are harder to move, and they change when the provider updates the model.
What are the steps to fix it?
Work in this order.
First, write down exactly what is wrong, with the question that produced it and the date. Ask more than once, because answers vary.
Second, find the source. Look at the links the engine shows. If it names a directory, review site or old article, correct that page or ask its owner to.
Third, state the right fact on your own site, in plain text, near the top of the page where it belongs: your name, what you do, where, prices, hours. Keep the same wording on your other profiles.
Fourth, make sure the engines can read the page. Check robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot. OpenAI and Perplexity both say changes can take about 24 hours to take effect (OpenAI, Perplexity).
Fifth, re-ask the same questions a week later and compare.
What about a namesake?
If the wrong facts belong to someone else with your name, add disambiguating detail where engines read it: city, field, employer, school, and links to your official profiles that agree with each other. Structured data should only repeat what is visible on the page, which Google requires (Google structured data policies).
How do I keep the right facts from drifting again?
Treat your key facts as one short document that lives in one place: legal name, what you do, where you operate, prices or ranges, hours, and how to contact you. Publish it on your site in plain text and copy the same wording to your profiles and directory listings. When something changes, such as a new address or price, update every place on the same day. Wrong facts often return because an old listing was never updated, so schedule a quarterly check of the pages the engines cite. Re-asking the same questions each month catches a regression early.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ask OpenAI to change an answer?
We have not verified a formal correction process for business facts, so we do not describe one. The reliable lever is correcting the sources the engine reads.
How long until the answer is right?
For answers drawn from live search, a few days after the source is fixed and re-crawled. For facts from model training, it can take a new model release.
Is it worth adding schema markup?
Yes where it matches visible text, but plain visible text comes first.
What if the engine will not stop repeating the error?
Check whether the error is on a page you do not control, and whether a competitor or an old listing keeps republishing it.
