How does Perplexity find businesses?
Perplexity documents two agents. PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity, and Perplexity says it is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. Perplexity-User visits a page when a person asks a question, to help give an accurate answer, and because a user requested the fetch it generally ignores robots.txt (Perplexity).
So the baseline is simple: to be eligible to appear in Perplexity's search results, Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt, and permitting its published IP ranges. Changes can take up to 24 hours.
What makes one page more likely to be used?
Perplexity does not publish a ranking formula, so the following is what we infer and test, not what it states.

- It is specific: a city, a service, a price range, rather than generic claims.
- Other sites say the same thing about you, such as directories and local press.
- It is clearly attributed and dated.

What does a mention look like?
