Why isn't my business mentioned when people ask AI tools for recommendations?
Usually one of five things: the engines' search crawlers cannot read your site, no page answers the question being asked, your key facts are hidden in images or scripts, a competitor's page is clearer, or the engine mixes you up with a similar name. Each can be checked in an afternoon.
Is it that the crawlers can't read my site?
Check this first. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot is for search and that sites blocking it can still appear as plain links but not in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI). Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot to appear in its results (Perplexity). Anthropic says blocking Claude-SearchBot may reduce visibility in search results (Anthropic). Open your robots.txt at yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for these names, and for a blanket "Disallow: /".
Is it that no page answers the question?
If buyers ask "who is the best electrician for older homes in [city]" and your site only has a general "Our services" page, there is nothing specific to quote. Create a page for that question, and answer it in the first two sentences.
Is it that the facts are hard to read?
Google asks that important content be available in text (Google). Prices in an image, hours in a PDF, or a page that shows nothing without JavaScript can be missed.
Is it that a competitor is clearer?
Ask the engine the question and open the sources it cites. Compare them with your page honestly. This is the most common reason for being replaced by a competitor rather than missing entirely.
Is it that the engine mixes me up?
Common names, or a business that changed names, can lead to the wrong entity. State your full name, location and what you do together on your site and keep it identical on your profiles.
How do I know which it is?
Test each cause in the order above and write down the result. Do not conclude from one answer, since answers vary. Ask each question at least three times per engine.
What if I fixed all of these and still do not appear?
Then the issue may be competitive rather than technical. Some categories and cities have many businesses with clear pages, and the engines name only a few. In that case, the question is what you can say that is specific and verifiable that others do not: a service area, a credential, a type of customer, a price range, a documented result. Put that on a page that answers a narrow question. Keep checking for a few weeks. If the same two or three competitors keep winning, study their cited sources and see what they have that you lack.
Frequently asked questions
Does a small business have a chance?
Yes. A specific, clear page can be named ahead of a bigger company with a vague one.
Do I need to be on Google's first page?
Google says AI features need pages that are indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Being indexed is required; first page is not stated.
Could a bad review be the cause?
Possibly, if the engines read it. Check the cited sources.
How fast can I check?
An afternoon for the crawler and page checks.
