What are proven ways to make AI recommend us instead of competitors?

Nothing forces an AI engine to recommend you, and anyone who says otherwise is overselling. What is supported by the engines' own documentation is being crawlable, answering the exact question clearly, stating facts in plain text, showing who is behind the page, and keeping it current. Then measure, because that is the only proof.

Is anything actually proven?

Be careful with the word. No provider publishes a test showing that a tactic guarantees a recommendation, so "proven" here means "documented as required or recommended by the engines, and consistent with what we see when we measure". Where something is inference, we say so.

What does the documentation support?

Be crawlable by the search bots. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot is for search and recommends allowing it (OpenAI). Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot (Perplexity). Anthropic says blocking Claude-SearchBot may reduce visibility in search results (Anthropic). This is the most clearly supported step.

Be eligible in Google. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need pages that are indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, and no extra optimization (Google).

Write for people. Google defines people-first content as content created primarily for people, not to manipulate rankings (Google).

What do we add from measurement?

This part is inference from scans, not documentation.

  • Pages that answer one question in their first two sentences are easier to quote.
  • A specific page for a specific question tends to beat a general services page.
  • Consistent facts across your site and profiles help the engine describe you correctly.
  • Real details (area, prices, credentials, dates) stand out against generic claims.

What should you avoid?

Fake reviews, invented authors, and hidden text. Google warns that any deception makes a page untrustworthy. They also tend to be found and are not worth the risk to your brand.

How do I choose where to start?

Start where the evidence is strongest and the work is smallest. First, access: allow the search crawlers. Second, one page for your most valuable question, written answer-first, with real facts and a visible author and date. Third, consistency: the same facts on your profiles. Only then consider extras such as structured data or new content series. Check the result after a few weeks before doing more. This sequence avoids the common failure of spending months on content that no engine could read, and it gives you a result you can measure at each step.

Frequently asked questions

What is the single best tactic?

Make sure the search crawlers can read your site. Everything else depends on it.

Do reviews matter?

Reviews and listings are sources engines may read, so keep yours accurate and complete. Never fake them.

Can I do this without a developer?

Much of it, yes: page copy, listings and FAQs. Robots rules and markup may need site access.

Will it work in every engine?

No. Engines use different sources, so check each one.
